Fritillaria affinis is a perennial in the Liliaceae family. Some common names include Checker Lily, Chocolate Lily, and Mission Bells. It is native to western North America, in California, north to British Columbia, Oregon, Washington, Montana, and Idaho. Growing from an edible bulb, the plant starts to emerge in the early winter and will bloom from late winter to mid-spring. It can have different mottling looks with the colors green, yellowish, brown, and purple. They get around a foot tall in the shade to part-shade. They do go dormant in the Summer, so this is a great winter plant to show off. It will require good drainage and keep dry during the summer. Zones 5-10 Germination Mix seeds and moistened soil together in a ziplock bag. Write the name on the bag. Place in the refrigerator for 120 days. Sow seeds into a well-drained, sandy compost and cover seeds to their own depth with sand or grit. Place the seed tray in bright light and keep moist. Seeds may germinate slowly.
