It is a deciduous tree or shrub that grows 8 to 25 feet tall with a 5 to 10 foot spread. It is also known as Fireman’s Hat because of it’s beautiful panicles of bright red tubular flowers that resemble the hats of firemen. These blooms will appear in late spring, and are pollinated by hummingbirds, perching birds and insects who are attracted to the nectar. Flowers are followed by large pods that split open to reveal bright red seeds in late summer and fall. Warning: Keep this plant away from young children. The shiny bright red seeds are very tempting and are considered poisonous to humans. The Coral Tree makes a nice small specimen tree or large shrub with trifoliate leaves that will twist and turn during the daytime to capture the correct amount of light needed. Although it has thorns along the stems, you will be rewarded all summer long with showy red flowers. Coral Tree can withstand temperatures down to 30F and can be grown in pots and over wintered indoors. Leaf: Alternate, tri-foliate compound, 5 to 8 inches long, each leaflet nearly heart-shaped (2 to 3 inches long and wide), margins entire, petiole has hooked prickles, green above and below. Flower: Attractive, deep red, in long, dense, terminal clusters up to 10 inches; each flower is tubular, 1 to 2 inches long, appearing in late spring and continuing to the fall. Fruit: Long, leathery twisted, contorted pod with bright red seeds that are considered poisonous to humans. Twig: Moderately stout, light brown, strong, conspicuous hooked prickles (resemble a cat claw), lighter raised lenticels; buds small sitting above shallow U-shaped leaf scar. Bark: Smooth light brown, developing shallow fissures with darker brown ridges giving the bark a striped pattern. Form: A small tree or shrub reaching up to 25 feet tall.
