Beautiful showy colorful tree . The Eastern Redbud is one of the first trees to bloom in the spring. It has stunning pea-like rose-purple flowers which bloom profusely on bare branches in early spring (March-April) before the foliage emerges. It is a deciduous, often multi-trunked understory tree with a rounded crown that typically matures to 20-30 tall with a slightly larger spread. Leaves are heart shape. This tree is native to eastern and central North America. Hardiness zone 4(-30 to -20) Edible flowers (to wide) bloom in clusters of 4-10. Can used in salads.Very sweet to taste. Pollinators and birds love this tree. Attractive in naturalized settings as street tree or lawn tree. Easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Part shade is best in hot summer climates. Performs best in moderately fertile soils with regular and consistent moisture. The seeds have to be scarified and cold stratified to break their winter dormancy. Keep seeds in the refrigerator at least 3 months before plant. .

Cercis Canadensis, Eastern Redbud Cold Hardy Flowering Tree 60 Seeds

Cercis Canadensis Also known as the Eastern Redbud Highly ornamental, large deciduous tree reaching 25-35 feet tall. It is particularly noted for its stunning pea-like rose-purple flowers which bloom profusely on bare branches in early spring (March-April) before the foliage emerges, followed by conspicuous long seed pods that start out lime green and age to purple-brown. The rounded heart-shaped leaves emerge apple green and develop to bluish-green. The young, small redbud plants are not cold hardy below 20 degrees F. Older plants are no problem at 10 degrees F. or less, zones 4-8. In colder areas, the leaves take a nice fall color of yellow or red. Tolerant of lime or acid soils, pH 5.5-8 is safe. The smooth silvery-gray branches are picturesque in the winter landscape. Plant in full sun to light shade with good drainage. Drought tolerant once established. Flowers and young pods are edible, and hummingbirds feed on its nectar. Also attracts butterflies!
