It grows naturally in rocky areas in the mountains, on slopes, or in the talus. It grows to about 6 feet tall and wide from spreading. The basal leaves are gray-green on a rosette. The red-orange flowers are in bloom in the spring and summer. They are magnets for hummingbirds, birds, moths, and butterflies. It prefers to grow in full sun to part shade with little water needs. A fast-draining soil will be needed. Zones 6-9GerminationMix equal parts of potting soil, vermiculite, and peat moss. Press seeds down into the media. Spread some long-fibered sphagnum moss on top of the potting media. Mist with a spray bottle. Cover the seed tray with clear plastic, and poke small holes in the plastic, maintaining a 64-75F. Uncover and mist as needed to keep the media moist. Place under a bright indirect light until germination.
