Arabian Coffee Shrub, Coffea arabica, Seeds (Showy, Edible, Evergreen, Fragrant)

Arabian Coffee Shrub, Coffea arabica, Seeds Showy Fragrant Flowers, Edible Fruits and Seeds, Evergreen Shrub or Small Tree, Container Plant, Heat Tolerant, Long Lived Arabian Coffee is an upright tropical evergreen shrub or small tree that grows to 10 to 15 feet tall. Although native to Ethiopia, Arabian Coffee has been cultivated in Arabia for over 1000 years. It is now commercially grown in subtropical and tropical areas throughout the world. In coffee plantations, plants are kept trimmed to 6 feet tall for ease of harvest and best production. Indoor container plants typically grow to 4 to 6 feet tall. Plants feature glabrous, glossy, elliptical, dark green leaves with prominent veins and wavy margins. Fragrant (resembles the aroma of jasmine), star-shaped, white flowers that bloom in axillary clusters of 2 to 9. Flowers are followed by green two-seeded fruits (berries) that gradually mature to yellow, light red and finally deep red. Berries are edible with a pulpy grape-like texture, but it is the seeds (coffee beans) that are coveted. Berries are picked by hand when ripe and depulped, with the extracted seeds/beans, then dried in the sun before roasting. Arabian Coffee is long lived with average economic age of plants 30 to 40 years, with some 100 year old plantations still bearing. Trees come into bearing at 3 to 4 years after planting and are in full bearing at 6 to 8 years. Fruits mature 7 to 9 months after flowering. Selective picking of ripe red fruits produces highest quality. Crop ripens over a period of several weeks.
