It has a wide range of forms, varying from very small dwarf palms to very tall, multi-trunked large palms. It is a clustering species, and very cold-hardy, taking temperatures down into the low teens without too much trouble (established, adult plants).

The palms are slow growing with in a clump form. The side shoots can be removed to grow as a single trunked palm. These prefer dryer roots and require well draining soil. They make excellent potted palms, as long as the pots have good drainage, particularly during the winter. A pair of these potted palms greet guests at Cherry Point Palms & Nursery. They withstood the -10 C, 15 F cold periods this past winter with no damage.
