Do not let fertilizer touch the plants. Water the plants after fertilizing. Insecticides: Insecticides may be used to protect plants. Bt-based insecticides and sulfur are organic options that can be used for prevention. Sulfur also has fungicidal properties and helps in controlling many diseases. Bt neem oil can be used to control the cutworm, Sevin® and Thiodan® can control for the eggplant flea beetle. Neem oil, Dacsure, and Disureig-sure can control for serpentine leafminers. Insecticidal soaps, neem oil, and spinosad controls for spider mites. Before using a pesticide, read the label and always follow cautions, warnings and directions. Diseases: Eggplant can get diseases at various stages, including seed rot, damping off, anthacnose, late blight, alternaria leaf spot, and verticillium wilt. Diseases may manifest if 3 conditions take hold: presence of a disease pathogen, a susceptible host, and a favorable environment. Diseases are preventable by rotating crops, proper irrigation, plant spacing, and good sanitation (such as disposing diseased plants). Check the plants daily and if spots or mold appear, treat the plant with an approved fungicide. Neem oil, sulfur, and other fungicides may be used. Please always follow label directions. Harvesting: Eggplant can be harvested when they are one-third to full size. Harvest before skin dulls and seeds become hard. If you lightly press the side of the fruit with your thumbnail and the indentation stays, then the fruit is ripe and ready to be picked. Cut the fruit off the plant rather than breaking off the fruit. Beware of the spines on the fruit stem and handle eggplants gently as they may bruise. Spade the soil 8-12 inches deep and completely cover plant material. You may optionally scatter 1 cup of a complete fertilizer on the soil for each 10 feet of row to be planted. The beautiful Pasilla Bajio chilli is slightly sweet, medium hot and rich-flavoured chilli pepper. They are green while young and turns to beautiful dark chocolate-brown when ripe. They are called “Chilaca” when fresh and used in sauce and also in salsa. But called “Pasilla” when they are grounded into a powder to make delicious mole sauces. They are high yield and a single chilli can grow up to 22cm!!! If you want to try medium hot chilli then I would recommend this. They have a beautiful spicy flavor but won’t burn you at all. This fleshy chilli can be eaten as raw, making salsa and can be used also in dried form in curry, sauce. They are one of the most used chili peppers in South America. Growing instructions: Best use seed raising mix from Bunnings or local nursery. Fill a small pot with seed raising mix and then sprinkle the seeds on the top of the soil. Cover them up with a thin (5 to 6mm) layer of soil (seed raising mix). Water them very lightly or keep moist and keep the pot indoor (may be next to the window if you do not have a green house) until they start germinating. Young seedling are very sensitive to harsh sun so make sure you are not burning them by putting/planting them under the full sun. Growing depends on where you are located. It’s much easier to grow in upper QLD than in VIC. So take care.
