Callirhoe bushii is a perennial in the Malvaceae family. A native to the U.S. in Iowa, Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, and Arkansas. The common name is Bush’s poppy-mallow. It grows in woodlands, prairies, and on calcareous soils in the wild. Most populations in the wild have 50 plants, with a few places having over a hundred plants. It is threatened by habitat loss with development and urbanization taking over its land. It can grow to a foot tall and spreading out to 4 feet wide. It has a taproot in the center. The leaves are 4 inches across and long that are palmate with five lobes. The flowers pop up 6 inches from the axis. They are a beautiful five-petalled scarlet-maroon with a white center in bloom from late spring until early fall. They prefer to grow in full sun with dry conditions. Zones 3-9 Germination Sow seeds the thickness of the seeds on top of the medium and lightly cover with soil. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic and keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 7-60 days.
