The summer time bell-shaped flowers form in large clusters and are pink to white blotched with red on the inside. Seeds are born within woody, boat-shaped fruit 1-7 cm long and are surrounded by fine hairs that can cause skin and eye irritation. Irritant hairs have been removed from the seeds we offer for germination. It can grow to a mature height of 35′-45′, and some records as tall as 60′. Brachychiton acerifolius | Flame or Lacebark Tree | 10 Seeds

Brachychiton acerifolius is a deciduous tree in the Malvaceae family. Its native range is from eastern Australia. Familiar names include flame tree, Illawarra flame tree, lacebark tree, and kurrajong. It likes to grow in coastal rainforests and also in drier forests. It is an excellent tree for planting along streets, in public parks, and in private gardens. The seeds are edible and eaten raw or roasted once the hairy coat is removed. It is a host plant for penciled blue, shining pencil-blue, common airplane, and tailed emperor butterflies, parrots, and other birds that eat the seeds. It can grow to 115 feet tall in its natural habitat but is usually seen as shorter. It grows in the pyramidal form, mostly around 30-40 feet tall. The trunk is cylindrical with a green-grey color. The glossy leaves can get a foot long and 10 inches wide with variable shapes. The show starts once the leaves drop. It reveals beautiful red flowers once the leaves have fallen off the tree. They are star-shaped, about an inch long and wide on panicles. The fruits a boat-shaped containing 15-30 seeds covered in hairs. It loves full sun with average water needs once established. Birds, bees, and butterflies are attracted to it. Zones 10-11 Germination Sow seeds on top of the soil and lightly cover them. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic, and keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 14-30 days.

Carrejun and carrejan were the indigenous names of trees in the foothills of the Blue Mountains near Sydney, and the bark was used for twine and fishing lines. The leaves are either simple and pointed, or may be 3–9 lobed.
