The blue wild indigo (Baptisia australis) seeds available from Chestnut Hill Nursery are suitable for outdoor planting in dry to medium conditions. This purple-flowered leafy perennial, which is part of the pea family, Fabaceae, thrives in full sun. The seeds will need at least a month of cold stratification (a cold, moist period) before they will germinate. Baptisia bracteata var. leucophaea is a perennial in the Fabaceae family. Its native range is Central and Eastern United States. Some familiar names associated with it are Longbract Wild Indigo, Cream False Indigo, Plains Wild Indigo, Cream Wild Indigo, and Large-bracted Wild Indigo. It is found growing in fields and sandy areas. It needs protection from the wind when young as the stems break easily. It can grow to about 2 feet tall and 4 feet wide, making a bushy cascade. The leaves are alternate and grow 2-4 inches long and are divided into three segments. Leaves can be mistaken by overly large stipules. They also turn colors in the fall to a gray, almost black color. It prefers to grow in part shade with well-drained sandy soil. The flowers are cream and in bloom from mid-spring until early summer. Bees and Bumble Bees are attracted to it. Zones 5-9 Germination Place your seeds and some soil in a ziplock bag. Moisten the mixture enough, so it sticks together without water dripping out. Write the name of the seeds on the bag. Place the mixture in your refrigerator for 30 days. Seeds can then be sown into a well-drained, sandy compost and covered lightly with sand or grit. Place the seed tray in filtered bright light and keep moist until germination.
