Seeds of this beautiful and very easy to grow tropical Musa Velvutina or Pink Velvet Banana. Hardy to zones 8-11 and can be planted outside with lots of mulch and frost protection. Outside it needs to be fertilized with slow release fertilizer and kept in full sun. This fast grower doesn’t reach grow much taller that 5 feet. I have had mine for five years and it hasn’t grown more than five feet. It has beautiful pest free foliage and a burgundy midrib running down the leaf. The flowers are hot pink and the bananas that follow are a beautiful bright pink also. When the fruit totally opens it appears to be a large group of lilies as the banana peels fold back, its quite a sight. This is also a very good house plant and one of the few bananas that will blossom inside. This easy to grow plant is very good in containers also. The seeds need to be soaked for 24 hrs and then sown 1″ deep and kept at 68 – 77 degrees with light. This ornamental banana grows to about 6 feet tall. The plant will stay smaller if grown as a container specimen for cooler climates. Can be used in tropical cut flower arrangements. This ornamental banana produces pink/red bracts. Blooms appear year-round. Extremely quick to flower, can flower when only 3 ft in height. The small pink velvety bananas are about 3 inches long, with white pulp and small black seeds. They are edible and quite sweet, but also full of seeds. Leaves oblong, 3 ft long and 1 ft wide, mottled in a green / wine pattern, pale with a dark red-purple midrib below. Hardiness zones 8-11. During Summer, plants can be stood outside or planted into the border but will need frost protection in Winter. This species is cold tolerant and will survive even frosty Winters outside if heavily mulched. In Winter, reduce watering and be aware that leaf ends may brown, however this is perfectly normal. Very easy to grow. Grows in full sun with shade. Young plants keep away from hot direct burning sunlight. Velvet pink banana is an excellent indoor container-plant and is one of the few bananas that will actually flower and bear fruit indoors up to zone 7. Musa species enjoy a rich soil and regular applications of fertilizer during the Spring and Summer. Keep well watered during hot periods; do not let dry out between waterings.
