Bald Cypress, Taxodium distichum, Northern Source, Tree Seeds Fall Colors, Hardy, Adaptable, Easy to Grow, Fast Growth, Long Lived, Bonsai, Shade Tree, Street Tree, Cold, Heat, Drought, Salt, and Wind Tolerant Bald Cypress is a fast growing long-lived, conifer tree. This is a large pyramidal tree that can grow 50 to 70 feet tall, with a trunk diameter at breast height of up to 10 feet or more. It is native to Southeastern swamps in the United States. In the South, it is a familiar sight that grows directly in swamp water, often in large stands, covered with Spanish moss. In the summer it looks like a needled evergreen but it is deciduous with the foliage turning an attractive orange cinnamon brown to red in the fall before dropping. (“bald” as the common name suggests). Though native to swamp areas, it grows very well in drier, upland soils. Trunks are buttressed at the base, and when growing in water, it will develop distinctive, knobby root growths (“knees”) which protrude above the water surface around the tree to 6 feet high. The bark is reddish gray or brown with long fibrous ridges that peel off in strips. The cones, mature in late summer, are round and about an inch in diameter. Bald Cypress is related to the Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia) which is also deciduous. Taxodium in Greek means resembling yews (Taxus) referring to the flat needles. Bald Cypress is the State tree of Louisiana. Called the wood eternal because of the heartwoods resistance to decay, Bald Cypress is used for heavy construction, including docks, warehouses, boats, bridges, as well as general millwork and interior trim. Leaf: Linear and small, 1/4 to 3/4 inch long, generally appearing two-ranked. When growing on deciduous branchlets the leaf-deciduous branchlet structure resembles a feathery pinnately (or bi-pinnately) compound leaf; green to yellow-green. Flower: Males in drooping, long panicles; females are subglobose, have peltate scales, and tend to occur near the end of branches. Fruit: Cones are composed of peltate scales forming a woody, brown sphere with rough surfaces, 3/4 to 1 inch in diameter; cones disintegrate into irregular seeds. Twig: May be deciduous or not; non-deciduous twigs are slender, alternate, brown, rough, with round buds near the end of the twig; deciduous twigs are two-ranked, resembling pinnately compound leaves. Bark: Fibrous, red-brown but may be gray where exposed to the weather; old, thick bark may appear somewhat scaly. Form: A large tree with a pyramid-shaped crown, cylindrical bole, fluted or buttressed base and often with knees.
