These desert plants love sun & heat, & are completely at home in soil that is rocky, sandy, heavy clay, nutritionally poor, or dry. Their brightly colored yellow petals & can bring a lot of cheer to a dusty dry landscape, or are perfect for any bed, border, rock garden, or container. This Marigold’s fuzzy silvery foliage grows in a neat clumping / mounding habit with its large 1 – 2” flowers held on stalks above. Its bright yellow blooms can begin to open as early as March, continuing all season long into the fall. The nectar riche blossoms will attract bees & butterflies to your garden, & birds will flock to nibble the seeds in the winter months. The Desert Marigold is also a larval host for the Desert Marigold Moth. Their double-petaled “paper daisy” flowers are long-lasting on the plants, as fresh cut flowers for a vase, or dried for arrangements. I did read that the Desert Marigold is likely poisonous to sheep, although supposedly horses & cattle are not affected. This plant does have traditional medicinal uses for humans. * Visit the flower department of our store for a huge selection of Marigold seeds in a wide variety of styles & colors! * Additional Details:All seeds will come in a resealable plastic zip lock bag with a label featuring a color photo of the plant, planting instructions, & details such as height, spacing, & light requirements for easy growing. Desert Marigold seeds (Baileya Multiradiata) 50+ seeds
Desert Marigold (Baileya Multiradiata) -50+ seeds- These were gathered wild in the Mojave desert in 2023 The desert-marigold is an annual or short-lived perennial, generally 10 to 30 inches tall with a basal rosette of one- to four-inch long, pinnate wooly, or hairy, leaves. Hairs are an important desert plant adaptation because they both increase light reflection, resulting in lower leaf temperatures, and they block ultraviolet light.Single, one- to two-inch wide flower heads grow on the end of stems up to one foot above the leaves. The plant ranges across southern Arizona north into southern Nevada and southwestern Utah, south into Mexico, west to the Mojave Desert and east through the Chihuahua Desert to Texas. Habitats: Desert-marigolds are one of the most conspicuous spring wildflowers across the arid lands of the southwest. They begin to flower in March and will continue to bloom off and on until November. Rain triggers additional rounds of flowering. They commonly grow on stony slopes and sandy plains and mesas and are most abundant on roadsides, where they may form dense yellow carpets. They range in elevation from 100 to 6500 feet. Their drought tolerance and long flowering season have made the desert-marigold a popular plant in the horticultural world. Researchers at ASU have extracted several desert-marigold compounds, which might help in cancer therapy by inhibiting tumor formation.
