Arisaema tortuosum | Whipcord Cobra Lily | Jack in the Pulpit | 10_Seeds

Here I am offering Seeds from Arisaema tortuosum, also known as Whipcord Cobra Lily, and Jack-in-the-Pulpit. Growing up to 6 feet high, this unusual lily does best in an area with light shade and moisture. It can be planted in full shade if you wish. The spadix is a whip like tongue that darts out the side of the mouth and shoots straight up. This vertical tongue is green or purple and can reach a foot high sometimes. The roots must be thoroughly dried or cooked before they can be eaten. But that is exactly what they do in Nepal. Mixed with lime juice, the fresh tubers are buried and left to ferment. Once ready, the tubers are dug up, washed and cooked. However, if eaten in excess, these tubers can cause violent illness. USDA Hardiness Zones 6 to 9 Powered by SixBit’s eCommerce Solution

Arisaema tortuosum is a herbaceous perennial bulb in the Araceae family. Its native range is from the Indian Subcontinent to south-central China. The familiar name is Whipcord Cobra Lily. It grows naturally in Rhododendron forests, alpine meadows, and scrub. It has a purple-green whip-like inflorescence that reaches up to a foot long. The flowers may be male or bisexual. The fruits come out green and slowly turn to a bright red. It can grow to 4 feet tall and 2 feet wide. The leaves are fuzzy and velvety to the touch. The flower is a Chartreuse yellow-green color looking like a cobra. It prefers to grow under a light shade with consistently moist soil. Zones 10-11 Germination Place your seeds and some soil in a ziplock bag. Moisten the mixture enough so it sticks together without water dripping out. Write the name of the seeds on the bag. Place the mixture in your refrigerator for 60 days. Seeds can then be sown 1/4″ deep into a well-drained, sandy compost and covered lightly with sand or grit. Place the seed tray in filtered bright light and keep moist until germination.
