Wapsie Valley Grazing Corn is an open pollinated corn ideal for a single grazing or greenleaf silage. This corn grows 10-feet tall plants with wide-adaptability to many climates and 8-inch ears with 12-18 straight-kernel rows. Ears are a rich yellow and waxy with some maroon and brown ears. This superior variety has an average crude protein of 11% and finishes for grain that makes it superior silage choice to other forage varieties so animals can easily enjoy the highly nutritious feed. In addition to being highly desirable to cattle, grazing corn can attract horses, chickens, turkey, deer, songbirds, squirrels, rabbits, and even black bears. Planting Instructions: Soil Preparation and Fertilizing: Corn will grow best in areas with plenty of sunlight and prefers well-drained soils with a pH between 5.5 and 7.0. To prepare the soil, clear the area of rocks, trash, and large sticks. Small pieces of grass and leaves can be mixed into the soil to make it richer. Spade the soil 8-10 inches deep and completely cover plant material. Rake the soil until it is smooth. Planting: Plant 1-2 ounces of seed for every 100 feet of row when temperature is no colder than 55F and rising. Plant corn seeds 1-2 inches deep and 6-12 inches apart. Space rows 2 1/2 – 3 feet apart. Can be planted throughout the summer for a steady harvest. Broadcast 30-50 lbs per acre or drill 20-40 lbs per acre. Harvesting: The optimum time to graze is at tassel for grass-fed operations or at 50% milk line for a mix of forage and grain. May provide roughly 13-18 tons per acre of forage.
