Royal Poinciana, Delonix regia, Tree Seeds (Showy Flowers, Fast, Tropical)

Royal Poinciana, Delonix regia, Tree Seeds Tropical, Fast Growth, Very Showy Flowers, Shade Tree, Street Tree, Heat, Salt and Drought Tolerant, Bonsai Royal Poinciana is a flamboyant tree in flower, some say the world’s most colorful tree. For several weeks in spring and summer it is covered with exuberant clusters of flame-red flowers, 4 to 5 inches across. Even up close the individual flowers are striking with four spoon shaped spreading scarlet or orange-red petals about 3 inches long and one upright slightly larger petal, which is marked with yellow and white. Royal Poinciana is very fast growing; about 5 feet per year until maturity. It grows 30 to 40 feet tall and its elegant wide-spreading umbrella-like canopy can be wider than its height. Royal Poinciana is deciduous in climates that have a marked dry season, but in areas where the winter is not that much dryer than the summer, it is a semi-evergreen tree. Even the leaves are elegant: they are lacy and fernlike, twice-pinnate, and 12 to 20 inches long with 20 to 40 pairs of primary leaflets (pinnae), each divided into 10 to 20 pairs of secondary leaflets (pinules). The dark brown seed pods are flat and woody, up to 24 inches long and 2 inches wide. Royal Poinciana is native to Madagascar. It is widely cultivated and may be seen adorning avenues, parks and estates in tropical cities throughout the world. A casual visitor might think the Caribbean Islanders invented this tree they call simply “Flamboyant.” Royal Poinciana is a spectacular shade tree in tropical climates. As a free standing specimen tree, it has no peers. Royal Poinciana tolerates salty conditions and can be grown near the coast, but not in openly exposed beach conditions. It tolerates hard pruning and can be kept at a small size and even grown in the greenhouse. Royal Poinciana puts on a spectacular show over a long season in spring and summer. Even if it never bloomed, it would still be one of the most beautiful trees in the world with its graceful live oak-like form, sculptured Ficus-like surface roots, and lacy fernlike foliage. Virtually everyone falls in love with this tree at first sight. It is so loved in Miami, Florida that they have an annual festival to celebrate its flowering. In the Caribbean Islands the pods are used for fuel and called “woman’s tongue” because of the rattling noise they make when the wind blows them (a couple other species share this nickname for the same reason). Royal Poinciana was named for an 18th century governor of the French West Indies, M. de Poinci. Leaf: Alternate, bipinnately compound, 12 to 24 inches long, 10 to 20 pairs of major leaflets, finely divide into 25 to 35 pairs of minor leaflets, green above and paler below. Flower: Large flamboyant brilliant red-orange, occurring in numerous, huge terminal clusters at the ends of branches, each individual flower has 5 large, wide spreading petals about 3 inches long, one petal streaked with white and yellow, appearing in early summer and continuing for months. Fruit: A large woody legume, 14 to 20 inches long and 2 inches wide, turning reddish brown to nearly black when ripe in late summer. Twig: Reddish brown, speckled with lighter lenticels. Bark: Smooth and gray-brown. Form: A wide spreading tree, with an umbrella-shaped crown reaching up to 40 feet tall and often wider. Other Names: Flamboyant Tree, Flame TreeZone: 10 to 12 (should not be exposed to temperatures below 45ºF (7.2ºC).Growth Rate: FastPlant Type: Deciduous to Semi-Evergreen Family: FabaceaeNative Range: MadagascarHeight: 30 to 40 feet Spread: 30 to 50 feet Shape: Wide, Rounded (Umbrella-shaped)Bloom Time: Early SummerBloom Color: Red-OrangeSun: Full Sun Fall Color: NoneDrought Tolerance: HighWater: Medium-Low Maintenance: LowSite Requirements /Soil Tolerances: tolerant of a wide range of well drained soils from acidic to alkaline and from loamy to gravelly.
