Planting Instructions: Soil Preparation: To prepare soil, remove weeds, large rocks, and litter from the planting area. Leave small weeds and dead grass, they will enrich the soil when turned under. You may add fertilizer or 2-3 inches of organic material such as compost, leaves, or rotted hay over the planting area at this point. Till to mix this organic material into the top 8-10 inches of soil. Make rows of soil beds 4-6 inches high and at least 2 feet apart. This formation of ridges will help with drainage. Planting: Plant outdoors after all danger of frost has past in Spring or in Fall when the soil is an average of 50F. Sow seeds in loose, fertile, moist, well-draining soil in full sun if planting in a cloudy climate or in partial shade if in hot climates. Plant seeds in a single seed line in 12″ apart raised beds at 18 inches apart at 1/8 inch depth. Soil temperature for best germination 60F. Keep plants weed free and keep soil moist but not soggy. Insecticides: Insecticides may be used to protect plants. Bt-based insecticides and sulfur are organic options that can be used for prevention. Sulfur also has fungicidal properties and helps in controlling many diseases. Before using a pesticide, read the label and always follow cautions, warnings and directions. Diseases: Check the plants daily and if spots or mold appear, treat the plant with an approved fungicide. Neem oil, sulfur, and other fungicides may be used. Please always follow label directions. Harvesting: Celtuce leaves are ready 4-5 weeks after planting and can be picked at any time during the growing season. Celtuce leaves are less bitter earlier in the growing duration. Celtuce stalks can be harvested when no larger than 1″ in diameter for best taste. Harvest stalks by using a knife to cut at the soil line. Keep top leaves on the celtuce until ready to prepare the stem.
