DESCRIPTION: Worsleyi is a must have hybrid crinum with stunning pink, very fragrant flowers that can vary from light pink to dark pink and, on occasion, produce different colored flowers open at the same time on one plant. This is a very difficult to locate crinum and will quickly become a prize in any garden. It is a medium to large-size crinum with bi-color flowers that are typically pink with a darker pink stripe down the middle of each petal. It is seed sterile. The flowers are large and have petal tips that re-curve backwards. The scapes are strong and it forms regular offset bulbs once the bulbs mature. We have observed as many as 14 flowers that open sequentially on 32" tall scapes. Ours always point in one direction. Mature bulbs grow to a huge, 7" in diameter. It is a reliable bloomer from March - June here in zone 9, northeast Florida. The flowers are heavy (thick) with an excellent substance making them very suitable as cut flowers. This is being offered by us on eBay for the first time in 2014. Currently we grow over 1000 varieties of crinum and have one of the largest collections in the world including about 350 of our own hybrids. BACKGROUND: The original cross done by Worselyi was lost, so Dr. Thad Howard, now deceased, recreated the cross using crinum scabrum and crinum moorei. We are told that there were at least 12 different seedlings being passed around all under the same name. Patrick Malcolm (The Nursery at Ty Ty founder) named one of the best 'Birthday Party' (see our listing). The others were largely unnamed, so there can be a lot of variation in the different bulbs that came from these seedlings. Crinum seeds, like most plants, are all genetically different. Typically the seedlings look the same, but they can also vary in appearance. GROWING CONDITIONS: Bulbs thrive on rich, loamy ground. They will do fine in sun or parital shace. This should do fine to Zone 7b and will need protection in colder areas. It will grow fine in a pot, but would have to be kept out of freezing weather. DESCRIPTION OF ITEM FOR BID: You are bidding on a Jumbo, blooming-size bulb at least 6 years old and about 3 1/2+" in diameter which should bloom within 1 year. It should transplant easily. The bulbs will be freshly dug and shipped bare root. WE SIZE OUR BULBS APPROXIMATELY BY AGE AS FOLLOWS: A few varieties can take 6 years or more to bloom. Jumbo bulb – has bloomed at least 2 years, close to the maximum size for that particular plant (6+ years old) Large bulb - should bloom this year or next (3+ years old, close to, or at blooming size) Medium bulb - should bloom in 1-2 years (at least 2 years old) Small bulb - should bloom 2-4 years (current year or 1-2 year old offset) Seedling bulb - started from seed (usually in its first year of growth unless otherwise stated) PHOTOS/ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: These are pictures of our plants, so you know exactly what they look like and what you will receive.
