Its native range is in China. Familiar names include Yunnan Banana and Wild Forest Banana. It grows in the mountainous forest, shadows away from the sun in nature. It lives at elevations of 3500 feet, where it can tolerate frost and shade but is vulnerable to leaf burn if in full sun. It is just as hardy as basjoo and sikimmensis species. It can grow to around 15-20 feet tall, and the pups will spread out through seasons. The pseudostems are covered in wax, giving it a white look with a bluish cast in the bark. The leaves have a bluish look on the topside but a reddish color on the underside. The fruits are around 3 inches long and consumed mainly by the birds, bats, and elephants in China. It prefers to grow in full shade with a high water need. Zones 9-11GerminationSoak seeds 24 hours. Sow seeds 1/2" deep and lightly cover. Keep moist in a bright spot.
