Phytolacca Americana, commonly known as poke berries, polk berries, poleberry, pokeweed, poke, pokesalad, pigeonberry and inkberry is a perennial herb in the Phytolaccaceae family. Native to the Eastern United States, Poke berries have a tough coating on their seeds allowing them to remain viable for up to 40 years! Many pollinators including bees, hummingbirds, and the Giant Lepard Moth love the white flowers that bloom in spring. While scientists investigate its potential use in cancer treatment it is important to note that all parts of the Poke Berry plant are poisonous to humans. Poke berries can be used as a natural dye for fabrics and were even used as ink to write letters during the civil.
